Stuart Walker is Professor of Industrial Design and currently serves as Co-Director of ImaginationLancaster, a creative research lab at Lancaster University, UK. Prior to that post, he was Associate Dean at the Faculty of Environmental Design, University of Calgary, Canada. He is also Visiting Professor of Sustainable Design at Kingston University UK.
His recent focus within product design is on establishing a "meaningful and sustainable material culture" -- an approach that has plenty of resonance with slowLab's Slow Design principles and projects. We're especially intrigued by his ideas around ephemerality (demonstrated by the object at left, among others) and what he calls 'evolving permanence.'
Walker's writings on design for sustainability have been widely published and his propositional designs have been exhibited across Canada, in Italy and at the Design Museum, London. He is author of Sustainable by Design: Explorations in Theory and Practice published by Earthscan, London and co-author of Enabling Solutions (with Ezio Manzini and Barry Wylant) published by University of Calgary press.
